The Highwall Expedition off-road tour

7 Hours | Full-Day Adventure

There are rides that follow trails, and there are rides that tell the story of the mountains. The Highwall Expedition off-road tour is the signature adventure of Highwall Expeditions, carrying guests across the rugged backcountry of West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia in a single unforgettable day.

The journey winds through active timber operations, reclaimed strip mines, and historic mountain routes once traveled by miners, loggers, and generations of Appalachian families. Riders may encounter wild horses roaming the ridgelines, free-ranging cattle grazing the mountains, and wildlife hidden among the forests that blanket the region.

One of the tour's highlights is the climb to Balk Knob, Kentucky, one of the highest points reached during the expedition. From the summit, guests are surrounded by endless Appalachian mountains stretching into three states, with views that seem to go on forever.

Along the way, riders cross the legendary Tug Fork River, the historic waterway that forms the border between West Virginia and Kentucky and played a central role in the Hatfield and McCoy feud.

The adventure concludes in historic Matewan, West Virginia, home to the Matewan Massacre and some of the most important labor history in America. After a day spent crossing state lines, mountain ridges, and coal country landscapes, riders return with a deeper understanding of the region and the people who call these mountains home.
